Transforming Travel: Enhancing Tourism AI Through Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing, as anyone who has followed this blog series would know by now, is a branch of artificial intelligence that works at the junction of human-computer interaction, by allowing computers to parse and interpret human language to perform a variety of tasks. NLPs then also allow computers to generate content in human languages, in addition to furnishing a quick and seamless transition between different human languages.

This is precisely why NLP technologies are useful in different realms and have begun changing the contours of diverse industries such as education, healthcare, and law. Further, even within the tourism sector, AI has begun overhauling the landscape regarding the possibilities of what travel experience can include.

A quick recap of how NLP works would be helpful in this regard. NLP technologies rely on a multi-step process that begins with identifying the source language, then breaking it down into its constituent semantic components, interpreting their meaning, and then finally finding words, phrases, and sentences in the target language that are equivalent in meaning to the source language.

For example, tourism AI can now bank on machine language to impart multilingual feedback to travelers from different places about their prospective travel destinations, bookings, and hotels, among various other things. Further, by enabling cross-cultural communication between different stakeholders, AI makes for an exponentially more comfortable travel experience. Further, the emergence of chatbots and voice bots has ensured that things have become even more convenient as tourists now have access to information at their fingertips.

This is especially important because the barriers in linguistic communication have historically deterred tourists from visiting countries where people do not speak their language. For example, a Portuguese speaker, in the absence of NLP technologies, would be hesitant to visit a country like Japan or Thailand, simply because of the logistical difficulties it would create in making things difficult for both the tourist and their hosts. This would then have led to travel becoming an alienating experience for tourists instead of a joyous and comfortable one.

Therefore, by allowing individuals to have a more immersive and personalized experience, that does not depend on reliance on third-parties for their comfort, tourism AI has reimagined what tourism can look like, bringing our world much closer than it has ever been before.
