Cultivating Comprehension: AI's Impact on Translation
AI relies on neural network technology to foster translations between two languages. As translation tools like ear Translate, Baidu Translate, and DeepL Translate continue to become major players in the arena of translation, thereby impacting the jobs available for human translators, it is important for us to scrutinize in-depth the various facets of AI-powered translations.
AI-powered translations mark a radical departure from traditional methods of communication, owing to the lightning-fast speeds at which text and speech can be translated. Its importance is foregrounded in a world so deeply heterogeneous as ours wherein a pervasive endlessness of diversity and difference colors every aspect of it. The very ability of AI to innovate itself constantly and to learn with every passing minute endows it with the capacity to better itself at producing quality translations.
Therefore, while translations produced by machines used to be error-ridden owing to the fact that machines translated texts through undertaking translations of individual words, the emergence of neural networks has ensured that current mechanisms of translation function by translating passages as a whole, which simultaneously ensures contextually-rich translations.
This has manifold impacts on the job market as well. Current research for example conducted by Célia Tavares and Luciana Oliveira et al outlines how AI is projected to impact interpreters and translators in the US job market by a whopping 76.5%. This bodes ill for several reasons. Significantly because culturally-sensitive translations are a crucial aspect of facilitating global cohesion, only human translators have the ability to translate texts in ways that are aware of the subtle differences across cultures which might result in severe shifts in tonality. As such, AI-powered translations brim with the possibility of offending people, as AI despite its best attempts is simply oblivious to the contours of human intuition and understanding which are necessary for understanding what distinguishes politeness from rudeness.
Additionally, there have been several instances of AI-powered translations that have worked to harm vulnerable communities, specifically refugees and asylum seekers. As AI is ill-equipped to translate relatively minor languages like Pashto, Swahili, or Dari, AI delivers erroneous translations that conflate pronouns and verbs, thereby needlessly alarming immigrant officials who deny the applications of refugees based on these woefully inadequate translations.
As such, currently, AI-powered translations have little to moderate utility despite their constantly increasing usage, requiring us to pay heed to the disastrous consequences of relying on such translations without verifying them through human oversight. Thus, we can say without qualms, that the human prowess to engage with language in stimulatingly rich ways enables the generation of powerful insights that produce translations that are superlative in every way possible when compared with AI-produced translations.
